Out of the million and one decisions swirling in your head when planning your wedding, the decision on a venue is probably the biggest of all, and the one most fraught with possible pitfalls and regrets. Whether you want a separate venue for ceremony and reception, or a single venue for the whole affair, Whistler and the Sea to Sky corridor fairly bristle with an abundance of amazing venues, both inside and out and with something for all seasons and all budgets. How can we narrow down the possibilities, to make our couples’ choice easier and less fraught?

Simple – we have a list of approved venues, venues which have been very carefully selected and vetted through the years. Couples can be confident that venues on our list only make the much-coveted cut if we are certain beyond all doubt that they meet our strict requirements for professionalism, expertise, collaboration, location, and more. Couples can choose from the list based on their budget, guest count, vision and theme. Or you can make suggestions of your own. If you have read our previous blog on what to look for when choosing a venue, you will already know what to look for based on those four criteria.

However, as experienced planners, knowing what does and does not work based on your guest count and theme, our critical eye can help you decide. We look at spaces differently. We know that one long family table is not the best choice for that venue, or that a casual rustic theme may not be the best choice for this venue. We can advise on lurking budget pitfalls that can trip up the unwary – for example, an all-inclusive cost for a hotel venue may initially seem daunting (‘HOW much?’), but we know that a less expensive venue requiring that everything, all rentals, catering and sometimes tenting, be brought in from outside, can sometimes in the long run prove more expensive. Let’s brainstorm together on a site visit.

One of our strictest requirements in our approved venues is an on-site events crew who are expert at what they do, happy to collaborate with us as one team, and above all, professional. The event crews at our most popular venues have become cherished friends, people we are delighted to work alongside because they are friendly and professional and damn good at what they do.

Occasionally, we admit,  we have been taken by surprise. At a recent wedding at a venue that was unfamiliar to us, we were unimpressed to have to clean up the outdoor ceremony site of garbage left from a previous event, surprised to discover the entire event team, on-site caterers and bar-staff had decamped before the event was concluded, and somewhat bemused to find ourselves at one point elbow deep in soapy water washing up side plates to be re-used for dessert, bussing reception tables of debris, and collecting dirty glassware. Whilst always happy to cheerfully roll up our sleeves to pitch in and help with the heavy lifting and dirty work, you can be sure this called for some raised eyebrows amongst our team. Needless to say, that particular venue did not make the cut onto our approved venue list.
